解説 Definition
昼と夜の長さがほぼ等しくなる日です。春分（3月頃）と秋分（9月頃）、年2回あります。
An equinox is one of the two times each year when day and night are nearly equal in length. It happens in spring and autumn and is used in astronomy and in discussions of the seasons. The word usually refers to a specific date or event in the year.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
equi- を見たら equal（等しい）系、-nox は nocturnal（夜の）を連想すると形がつかめます。つまり「昼と夜がほぼ equal になる日」と置くと覚えやすいです。solstice が「昼夜の長さが極端にずれる夏至・冬至」なのに対し、equinox はバランスが取れる節目。spring equinox, autumn equinox の形でもよく出るので、年2回の“昼夜がつり合う日”として固定すると忘れにくいです。
`Equi-` means equal, as in `equivalent`, and `nox` is related to night. Put them together and you get the idea of equal day and night. It stays in memory well if you contrast it with `solstice`, which is the opposite kind of seasonal turning point.

equinox はラテン語 aequus「等しい」と nox「夜」から来た aequinoctium に由来します。昼と夜の長さが等しくなる時点なので、「等しい夜」から春分・秋分の意味になりました。関連語は equal, nocturnal。
