Numerology is the belief that numbers have special meanings and can affect a person's life or future. It is often connected with spiritual ideas rather than science. People usually use this word when talking about fortune-telling or symbolic meanings of numbers.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず語尾の -logy を見たら「〜学・体系」と反応する。psychology, biology と同型なので、numerology もまずは「number 系の何か」とつなげる。numeral, enumerate, outnumber などの numer- を知っていると、「数を材料に意味を読む分野」とまとまりやすい。ポイントは、算数や statistics のような客観的計算ではなく、birth date や lucky number から性格・運命を読む占い寄りの語だとセットで覚えること。
The ending `-logy` often means a system of study, like in `biology` or `psychology`. The first part `numero-` points to numbers, as in `numeral`. So this is easy to store as “a number-based belief system,” not regular math or statistics.
