nutter は nut「木の実」に行為者を表す接尾辞 -er が付いた形で、もとは「木の実を拾う人」です。のちに nut が俗語で「頭」や「変人」を指すようになり、「変わり者」という意味へずれました。nutty や nutcase も同系です。
Nutter comes from nut with the ending -er. It originally meant someone connected with nuts, such as a person who gathered or dealt in them. Later, because nut became slang for a person's head and then for a foolish or strange person, nutter shifted to mean an odd or crazy person; compare nutty and nutcase.
