露天掘り、または地表を掘削して鉱物やその他の資源を採取する採掘方法。地下坑道を使わない採掘。
Opencast is a method of mining in which minerals or coal are taken from the ground by digging a large open hole at the surface. It is used when the material is close enough to the top of the ground to be reached without tunnels. The term is mainly used in British English and technical discussions about mining.

open が入るので、まず「地表に開いたまま」の採掘法だと押さえると覚えやすいです。underground mining と対比すると定着します。英語では opencast mine / opencast mining の形でよく出て、「坑道を下へ伸ばす」のではなく、上から広く削って資源を取る場面を思い浮かべるのがコツです。open-pit とかなり近い語なので、どちらも“地面が開いて見えている採掘”の仲間としてセットで覚えると混同しにくくなります。

opencast の語源・成り立ち Etymology
opencast は古英語系 open「開いた」と、古ノルド語 kasta 由来の cast「投げる・外へ放る」から成る複合語です。broadcast や castaway と同じ cast を含み、土や岩を外へ放って地表を開いたまま掘るので「露天掘り」になる、と考えると腑に落ちます。
