眼科は目の医学に関する医学の専門分野です。眼の疾患や視力の問題の診断と治療を扱います。
Ophthalmology is the area of medicine that studies and treats the eyes and eye diseases. It is used in medical and hospital contexts. A doctor in this field is called an ophthalmologist.

まず後半の -logy は biology, geology と同じ「学問・専門分野」。長い語でも ophthalmo + logy に切ると覚えやすいです。ophthalmo- は ophthalmic（眼科の）, ophthalmologist（眼科医）, ophthalmoscope（検眼鏡）にも出るので、「ophthalmo が見えたら目の分野」と一括で記憶すると定着します。optician や optometry は眼鏡・視力測定寄りですが、ophthalmology は病気の診断や治療を担う医学分野。病院の Department of Ophthalmology でもよく見ます。
