Memory Tip

Drop the final silent e in organise and add -ing to make organising. Picture bringing separate things or people into an orderly structure.

Etymology

ギリシャ語organon(道具・器官)→ラテン語organizare(体系立てる)→フランス語organiserを経て英語に。organ(器官)+ize(~化する)の構成。関連語:organ(器官)、organism(有機体)。

Organising is formed from organise plus the participial ending -ing, with the final silent e removed. Organise entered English through French organiser and is ultimately connected with Greek organon, “tool” or “instrument.” The related noun organ came to suggest a part performing a particular function within a larger system. British English normally writes organise and organising, while American English generally uses organize and organizing.
