orientate は Latin oriri「昇る」から出た orient「東・方向づける」に -ate が付いた語です。太陽が昇る東が基準なので「東へ向ける」から「向きを定める」へ広がり、origin や oriental と同根だと意味の芯が見えます。
Orientate is built from orient with the verb-forming ending -ate. Orient ultimately goes back to Latin oriri, meaning "to rise," and it first referred to the east, where the sun rises.
