いつもの正しい並びや調子から外れている場面という字面から、体調や気分がいつもと違ってすぐれないことを表す。大病ではなく、少し不機嫌、だるい、落ち着かない状態に使う。 実際の字面どおりではなく、感情や状況を具体的な絵で強める慣用句。
