外側へ
解説 Definition
外側の方向へ、または内側から外側へ向かうことを表します。外部の方へ進む、または展開する様子を示します。
Outwards means toward the outside or away from the center of something. It is used for movement, direction, or position in space. In some contexts, it can also mean showing something on the surface rather than keeping it inside.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
out + ward(s) で「外の方向へ」。まず out=外へ、toward/backward/onward などの -ward(s)=「…の向きへ」という並びをまとめて覚えると定着しやすいです。outward が形容詞で「外向きの」という感じでも使われるのに対し、outwards は副詞で「外側へ動く」感覚が強め。spread outwards, move outwards, curve outwards のように、中心・内側から外へ広がる場面を一緒に覚えると、単なる outside との違いも見えます。反対語 inwards もセットで。
Split it into "out" and "-wards," meaning toward a direction. If you know words like "backwards" or "onwards," the pattern is easy to keep. Remember it with collocations such as "spread outwards" or "curve outwards," and pair it with the opposite word "inwards."
例文
The doors opened outwards into the hallway.

outwards の語源・成り立ち Etymology
outwards は古英語の outweardes にさかのぼり、out「外へ」+ -ward「…の向きへ」+ 副詞語尾 -s から成る語です。outward や toward と同じく「位置」より「外向きの方向」を示すので、ただ外にあるのでなく、外へ向かって動く感じが語源に残っています。
Outwards goes back to Old English outweardes, built from out, -ward, and the adverb ending -s. The element -ward means "in the direction of," as in toward and backward. So the word originally stressed movement or facing toward the outside, not simply being outside.
