文章・発言・報告書などで、内容を実質的に増やさず分量だけをかさ増しする無駄な語句や部分を指す名詞。情報価値の低い説明や重複表現を含み、読み手にとって冗長で、文章の明確さや説得力を弱める要素として使われる。
Padding is extra material, words, or content added to make something longer or thicker without adding much real value. In writing, it often means unnecessary words used to fill space. The word can also refer to soft material used for protection or comfort.

`pad` は「クッション・詰め物」。`padding` を見るたびに、文章の中身の周りに余計な綿を入れて、厚くはするが価値は増やしていない場面を思い浮かべると定着しやすいです。レポートやスピーチで、同じことの言い換えや不要な説明で長さだけ増やす部分が典型。`details` や `evidence` の追加は内容強化ですが、`padding` はあくまで“かさ増し”。近い語の `filler` より、分量を膨らませる感じが強いです。

padding の語源・成り立ち Etymology
padding は英語 pad「やわらかな当て物・詰め物」に -ing が付いた語で、pad 自体は語源未詳ながら低地ドイツ語の pad「足裏」と結びつけて説明されます。notepad や kneepad と同じく「何かをやさしく支えるもの」と見ると、「詰め物」の感覚がつかめます。
Padding comes from pad with the noun ending -ing. Pad itself has an uncertain origin, but it may be connected with Low German words referring to the sole of the foot or a soft support. The core idea is something soft placed under or around another thing, and from that it developed into the sense of filling or cushioning; compare kneepad and notepad.
