解説 Definition
古第三紀は新生代の最初の地質時代である。約6600万年前から2300万年前までの期間で、恐竜の大量絶滅後に哺乳動物が繁栄し、初期の霊長類が進化した時代。
The Paleogene is an early period in Earth’s history, beginning after the dinosaurs died out. It is mainly used in geology and paleontology to talk about the development of modern mammals, birds, and plants.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
地質時代名は対や並びで覚えると残りやすい。Paleogene は Neogene とセットで見て、neo- が「新しい」側なら paleo- は「古い」側、と位置関係で固定すると覚えやすい。内容は「恐竜絶滅のあと、哺乳類が広がり始めた新生代前半」と場面で結びつけるとよい。Paleolithic は人類史の『旧石器』で似て見えるが、こちらは geology の時代区分。the Paleogene period の形でもよく出る。
