Curare is a plant-based poison traditionally used on arrows in some parts of South America. In medicine, it has also been used in carefully controlled amounts to relax muscles. The word is mostly seen in scientific, medical, or historical contexts.

curareはスペイン語・ポルトガル語を経て、ガイアナのカリブ系語wurari/kurariに由来する借用語です。接頭辞などには分けにくく、原義は「矢に塗る毒」に近いので、後に筋弛緩薬として使われても強い作用の語感が残ります。curarineやcurarizeは同根です。
Curare came into English through Spanish and Portuguese from an Indigenous Carib language of the Guiana area, in forms like wurari or kurari. It was originally the name of a poison used on arrows. Later the word was borrowed into medicine, but it still kept the strong sense of a powerful substance. Related forms include curarine and curarize.
