relaxantはラテン語relaxareにさかのぼり、re-「ほどいて」+ laxus「ゆるい」+ -ant から成ります。つまり「緩めるもの」で、筋肉や緊張をゆるませる薬名にそのまま納得がいきます。relaxやlaxativeにも同じlax-が見えます。
