覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
元素記号 Pd、原子番号46の貴金属として覚える。自動車の catalytic converter「触媒コンバーター」、electronic parts「電子部品」、jewelry「宝飾品」と結び付けると用途が整理できる。名称は小惑星 Pallas に由来し、日常では不可算名詞として a small amount of palladium、the price of palladium の形を取る。
Connect palladium with the chemical symbol Pd and with three typical contexts: catalytic converters in vehicles, electronic components, and jewelry. These uses reflect its value as a rare, silvery-white metal that resists corrosion and acts as an effective catalyst. Its name was taken from the asteroid Pallas, so Pallas can serve as a factual memory link rather than a sound-based trick. In ordinary sentences, palladium is generally an uncountable material noun: say a small amount of palladium or the price of palladium, not a palladium when referring to the metal.

palladium の語源・成り立ち Etymology
palladium は1803年に命名された元素名で、前年に発見された小惑星 Pallas にちなむ。Pallas は女神パラス・アテナの名で、さらに palladium には古く「都市を守る聖像・守護物」の意味もあったため、貴重で特別な金属名として理解しやすい。関連語は Pallas, Palladian。
The element was discovered by William Hyde Wollaston and named palladium in 1803 after Pallas, an asteroid discovered the previous year. The asteroid’s name refers to Pallas, an epithet associated with the Greek goddess Athena. The element name is historically separate from the older common noun palladium, meaning a sacred safeguard or protective object, although both ultimately contain the same name Pallas.
