palmetto の語源・成り立ち Etymology
palmetto はスペイン語 palmito「小さなヤシ」から英語に入り、さらにラテン語 palma「ヤシ・手のひら」にさかのぼります。palm や palmate と同根で、葉が手のひらのように広がる木だからこの名になった、と考えると意味がつかみやすいです。
Palmetto was borrowed from Spanish palmito, a word for a small palm. It ultimately belongs to the family of Latin palma, meaning both “palm tree” and “palm of the hand.” Palm and palmate share this historical association, which suits the plant’s fan-shaped leaves spreading outward like fingers. English has used palmetto for several low-growing or small palms, particularly species associated with the southern United States, and the plant name later entered regional names and nicknames.
