A pannier is a bag, or a pair of bags, carried on the side of a bicycle, motorcycle, or animal to hold things. In historical fashion, it can also mean a frame that made the sides of a skirt wider. In modern everyday use, it most often refers to bicycle bags.

Pannier came into English from French pannier, and goes back to Latin panarium, meaning "bread basket," from panis "bread." At first it meant a basket for carrying bread. Later the meaning widened to side baskets for carrying goods, and then to the hoop-like side extension worn under skirts.
