patchouli はインド系の植物名が英語化した語で、タミル語 pachchai ilai「緑の葉」に由来するとされる。pachchai「緑」＋ ilai「葉」なので、香りの強い葉そのものを名づけた語だと分かる。関連語は patchouli oil, patchoulol。
Patchouli entered English from a South Indian plant name, probably from Tamil pachchai ilai. Those parts mean "green" and "leaf," so the original name referred directly to the plant's leaves. English kept the borrowed form as the name of the fragrant plant and its oil, as in patchouli oil.
