potpourri の語源・成り立ち Etymology
potpourriはフランス語で、pot「壺」+ pourri「腐った」から成り、もとはスペイン語 olla podrida「ごった煮」由来です。putridやputrefyも同じ語根を持ち、花の香り袋なのに「いろいろ混ざったもの」も意味するのは、雑多な煮込みの比喩が残るからです。
Potpourri comes from French, where it literally meant "rotten pot," from pot "pot" and pourri "rotten." The French phrase was influenced by Spanish olla podrida, a mixed stew. Because of that idea of many things blended together, the word later came to mean any mixture, not only dried scented materials.
