Conversant means well informed about a subject and able to talk about it with understanding. It is often used in formal English to describe knowledge or familiarity. It commonly appears with "with," as in being conversant with a topic or field.

conversant はラテン語 conversari「交わる、共に暮らす」に由来し、con-「共に」+ versare「向きを変えつつ行き来する」を含みます。converse や reverse と同じ vert 系で、ある事柄の周りを何度も行き来した人だから「詳しい」になるわけです。
Conversant comes from Latin conversari, meaning "to live with" or "associate with," from con- "with" and a verb related to turning or moving around. It is related to converse and, more distantly, reverse. The meaning shifted from spending time among people or things to being familiar with a subject through repeated contact.
