まず meter を「拍子・リズムの単位」として押さえると覚えやすいです。thermometer などと同じく meter は「測る・単位」の感覚があり、詩では音の区切りを数える語。そこに penta- が付くので「5つの単位をもつ1行」と整理できます。pentagon が五角形なら、pentameter は「五つの拍のまとまり」。実際は iambic pentameter という形で非常によく出るので、シェークスピアの整ったせりふのリズムと結びつけると定着します。
