解説 Definition
percentile は、データの中でどの位置にあるかを百分率で示す「パーセンタイル」という意味です。日本語のカタカナ語とほぼ同じで、統計や試験結果の説明でよく使われます。
A value or rank indicating the percentage of observations in a distribution that fall at or below a particular point. For example, a score at the 90th percentile is as high as or higher than about 90 percent of the comparison group.

Percentile was formed in English from percent and the suffix -ile on the model of statistical terms such as quartile and decile. Percent ultimately comes from Latin per centum, meaning “by the hundred” or “for every hundred”; centum means “hundred.” The term was adopted in statistical language for each of the values that divide an ordered distribution into one hundred groups, and later also for the ranks associated with those divisions.
