惑星や彗星が太陽に最も接近する軌道上の点。楕円軌道における最近距離点である。
Perihelion is the point in an orbit when a planet, comet, or other object is closest to the sun. The word is mainly used in astronomy and space science. It describes a position in movement, not a permanent place.

まず helio- を heliocentric（太陽中心の）と結びつけて「太陽」と押さえる。さらに peri- は perimeter などにもある「周り・近く」の感覚。すると perihelion は「軌道上で太陽の近くに来る点」だと分かる。天文では a planet reaches perihelion, closest to the Sun の形で出やすい。反対語の aphelion と必ず対で覚え、peri- が近い側、ap- が遠い側と整理すると混同しにくい。
