A stepchild is the child of your husband or wife from an earlier relationship. The word is used in family contexts when marriage creates a new parent-child connection. It can also be used figuratively for a person or thing that is treated as less important.

stepchild の step- は「段階」ではなく、古英語 steop-「親を失った・身寄りの薄い」に由来する。もとは孤児に近い語感で、そこから前婚の子を指す語へ移ったため、家族の中心から少し外れる感覚が残る。stepmother, stepbrother も同系。
In stepchild, step- does not mean a stair or stage. It comes from Old English steop-, which referred to a child who had lost a parent or was deprived in the family. The meaning later shifted to family relationships formed by remarriage, which is why stepmother and stepbrother use the same element. The older sense helps explain the slightly distant feeling the prefix sometimes carries.
