父親が再婚した相手の女性で、その子どもにとって親のような役割を担うことが多い。血縁はないが、家庭に入り家事や教育を助けたり、養育を分担したりする存在である。養子縁組などで法的な親子になることもあるが、必ずしもそう限らない。
A stepmother is a woman who becomes someone's mother by marrying their father, but is not their birth mother. The word is used in family relationships after remarriage. It describes a social family role, not a biological one.

stepmother の step- は『一歩』ではなく、古英語 steop-「親を失った・孤児の」に由来します。もとは親の死で生じた家族関係を表したため mother と結びついて『継母』となり、背景を知ると語の重みが見えます。関連語は stepchild, stepbrother。
In stepmother, step- does not mean "a step of the foot." It comes from Old English steop-, used for family relationships formed after a parent had died. That older sense later became the usual prefix for remarried-family terms such as stepchild and stepbrother.
