coccyx はギリシャ語 kokkyx「カッコウ」由来で、尾てい骨の形が鳥のくちばしに似ることから名づけられました。接尾辞的な分解は乏しい語ですが、coccygeal（尾骨の）や coccygodynia（尾骨痛）に同じ語根が残り、形の連想が意味を支えています。
