ホスファターゼ

解説 Definition

phosphatase は、分子からリン酸基を取り除く働きを持つ酵素「ホスファターゼ」を指す名詞です。主に生化学の専門用語として使われます。

A phosphatase is an enzyme that removes a phosphate group from a molecule by hydrolysis. Such enzymes act on proteins and many other biological substrates and play important roles in cellular regulation and metabolism.

使い方 Usage

  • phosphatase activity「ホスファターゼ活性」は、試料中の酵素の働きについて述べるときの組み合わせです。 Phosphatase activity is a common combination when discussing how the enzyme acts in a sample.
  • remove a phosphate group from ... で「…からリン酸基を取り除く」と、酵素の働きを説明できます。 Use remove a phosphate group from ... to describe what the enzyme does to a molecule.

使い分け Common distinctions

  • リン酸基を付ける kinase と、取り除く phosphatase を対にして整理すると覚えやすくなります。 Pair kinase, which commonly adds a phosphate group, with phosphatase, which removes one.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

phosphate「リン酸塩・リン酸基」と、酵素名の目印になる -ase を結び付け、「リン酸基を取り除く酵素」と覚えましょう。

Connect phosphate with -ase, an ending commonly used in enzyme names. Remember phosphatase as an enzyme that removes a phosphate group.

例文

The lab measured phosphatase activity in the sample.

研究室はその試料のホスファターゼ活性を測定しました。

This phosphatase removes a phosphate group from the protein.

phosphatase の語源・成り立ち Etymology

phosphataseはphosphate+-aseで、「リン酸に作用する酵素」という作りです。phosphateはフランス語経由でphosphorusに、さらにギリシャ語phosphoros(phos「光」+phoros「運ぶ」)にさかのぼるため、理科語ながら語源は「光を運ぶもの」で、関連語にphosphorusとphosphorescenceがあります。

Phosphatase was formed from phosphate and the enzyme-forming suffix -ase, literally identifying an enzyme that acts on phosphate-containing compounds. Phosphate belongs to the phosphorus word family. Phosphorus ultimately comes from Greek phosphoros, “light-bearing,” composed of phos, “light,” and phoros, “bearing,” because elemental phosphorus can appear luminous under suitable conditions. The suffix -ase became a productive convention in biochemical enzyme names. Thus, the immediate structure of phosphatase describes biochemical function, even though the deeper history of phosphorus refers to light.
