物や文章などに飾りを加えて見栄えをよくすること。比喩的には、話や説明に細かな要素を付け足して面白くしたり、実際より立派に見せたりすることも表す。単に大げさにするだけでなく、飾り立てる・脚色する含みが強い語である。

embellishはフランス語embellirから入り、em-「〜にする」+ bel/bell「美しい」が核です。belleやbeautyと同系で、元は「美しくする」ことなので、話を飾り立てて誇張する意味へ広がった流れが見えます。
Embellish came into English from French embellir, built from em- "make, put into" and bel or bell, "beautiful." It is related to English beauty and to French belle.
