pipa は英語に中国語 pípá から入った借用語で、楽器名そのものが語源です。漢字の「琵琶」は弦を前後にはじく奏法を表すとされ、日本語の「琵琶（びわ）」も同系。名前がそのまま楽器を指すので意味をつかみやすい語です。
