Definition

Powerlifting is a strength sport in which competitors attempt to lift the greatest possible weight in three events: the squat, bench press, and deadlift. Performance is generally measured by the heaviest successful lift in each event and the resulting total.

Memory Tip

train for powerlifting、powerlifting competition

Build the word from power plus lifting, then attach it to its three competition lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift. Picture an athlete aiming for one maximum-weight attempt in each movement and combining the successful results into a total. Common phrases include train for powerlifting, a powerlifting competition, and a powerlifting coach. Do not treat powerlifting as another name for Olympic weightlifting: Olympic competition uses the snatch and the clean and jerk, whereas powerlifting uses the three slower strength movements listed above.

Etymology

Powerlifting is a twentieth-century compound formed from power and lifting, modeled in part on weightlifting. Power came into English through Anglo-French from Latin potere, a form related to posse, “be able.” Lift is of Germanic origin and is commonly connected with Old Norse lypta, “raise.” The compound transparently names a sport centered on demonstrating strength by lifting heavy weights, later standardized around three competitive events.
