  • preaches about kindness のように、about の後に説教や講話の話題を置く形も使います。 Use about to introduce the topic of a sermon or talk, as in preaches about kindness.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

preach の語末は -ch なので、三人称単数現在形は -es を付けて preaches となります。発音は /ˈpriːtʃɪz/。The pastor preaches every Sunday. を手掛かりに覚えましょう。

Preach ends in -ch, so add -es for the third-person singular present: preaches, pronounced /ˈpriːtʃɪz/. Use The pastor preaches every Sunday as a memory anchor.

preaches の語源・成り立ち Etymology

preach の語源は古フランス語 prechier、さらにラテン語 praedicare「公に告げる」。prae-「前で・公に」+ dicare「言い表す」から成り、もとは人前で知らせることなので「説教する」になった。関連語は preacher、predicate。

Preach entered English through Old French prechier, from Latin praedicare, meaning “to proclaim publicly” or “declare.” The Latin verb is associated with prae-, “before” or “in front,” and dicare, “to proclaim or make known.” Its public-declaration sense developed naturally into delivering religious teaching. Preaches is formed from the English verb preach by adding the third-person singular ending -es after final -ch.
