demented はラテン語 de-「離れて」＋ mens（ment-）「心・知性」にさかのぼり、もとは「心が本来の状態から外れた」という発想です。mental や mention も同じ mens 系で、知性や心の働きが乱れることから「認知症の・正気でない」という意味になりました。
