解説 Definition
「mayday」は船や飛行機などが遭難や重大な危険に陥ったときに、国際的な無線通信で送る緊急の救難呼出です。連続して三回繰り返すことで緊急性を強調し、救援の到来を急ぎます。他の緊急表現と同じ目的を持ちながら、口頭の通信で使われる定型句として広く認識されています。
Mayday is an international emergency call used by pilots and ship crews when they are in serious danger and need immediate help. It is used in radio communication in life-threatening situations. The word is fixed in form and is normally repeated three times in an actual distress call.

mayday の語源・成り立ち Etymology
mayday は英語本来の語ではなく、フランス語 Venez m’aider「助けに来て」に由来する無線遭難信号です。m’aider の音が英語で mayday と聞こえた形で定着し、切迫して救助を求める響きがそのまま意味になりました。関連語は aid, aider です。
Mayday does not come from native English roots. It was borrowed from the French call venez m’aider, meaning "come help me," used in radio emergencies. English speakers heard m’aider as mayday, and that sound form became the fixed distress signal; compare aid and French aider.
