Memory Tip
open its huge maw「巨大な口を開ける」、disappear into the beast's maw「怪物の口へ消える」が典型。
Picture the huge, dark mouth of a hungry beast opening to swallow its prey. The word suggests size, greed, and danger, so it is stronger and more frightening than an ordinary mouth. It can also describe openings such as the dark entrance of a cave.

Etymology
The word comes from Old English maga, meaning “stomach” or “belly,” and is traced to roots associated with a bag. It later developed senses referring to an animal's stomach and a large open mouth.
