hinterland はドイツ語由来で、hinter「後ろの」+ Land「土地」から成る語です。港や海岸の“背後に広がる土地”が原義なので、日本語の「後背地」ときれいに対応します。関連語は hind, inland。
Hinterland comes from German, from hinter meaning "behind" and Land meaning "land." It first referred to the land behind a coast, port, or frontier.
