seaboard は sea「海」+ board「板・縁」からなる語で、どちらも古英語にさかのぼります。board は船や板のへり・側面を指したため、「海のふち」が海岸線や沿岸地方を表すようになりました。aboard や overboard にも同じ board の「縁・船べり」の感覚が残ります。
