人がある行動や考え方に自然と向かいやすい性質やくせを表す語。生まれつきの気質にも、長く続いて身についた傾きにも使え、好ましくない習慣だけでなく、特定の物事を強く好む傾向を述べるときにも用いられる。

proclivityはラテン語proclivitasに由来し、pro-「前へ」+ clivus「坂」で、文字どおり「前へ傾いた坂」を表す。心が自然にそちらへ滑っていく比喩から「性癖・傾向」になった。declivityやacclivityも同根で、気質を地形で捉える語だとわかる。
Proclivity comes from Latin proclivitas, from pro- "forward" and clivus "slope" or "hill." It first suggested a slope leaning downward in front, where something naturally slides in one direction. From that picture, it came to mean a natural mental leaning or tendency. Related words include declivity and acclivity.
