proline は1904年ごろの化学語で、ドイツ語 Prolin から入り、pyrrolidine の短縮形に由来する。関連語は pyrrolidine と pyrrole で、分子がその五員環構造をもつための命名なので、「形から名がついたアミノ酸」と納得しやすい。
