pyrimidine はドイツ語 Pyrimidin からで、pyridine に amidine の要素 -mi- を差し込んで作られた化学語です。既存の化合物名を組み合わせて骨格の似方を示した名だと分かると、無機質な名前にも理由が見えます。pyridine や amidine が近縁です。
Pyrimidine came into English from German Pyrimidin. It was formed as a scientific name by blending pyridine with an inserted element from amidine to show a chemical relationship. So the word was created to suggest a structure similar to known compounds, rather than growing from an older everyday word. It is closely related to pyridine and amidine.
