Disengaging means separating from something or stopping active involvement in it. It can be used for physical connection, attention, or participation, depending on the context.

disengaging はまず engage を知っていると覚えやすい。engage は「参加する・関わる・かみ合う」で、会話・仕事・歯車のように何かがつながっている感じ。そこに dis- が付くと、その結びつきが外れる方向になるので「離脱する」。be engaged in なら関与中、be disengaging なら今まさに距離を取りつつある状態。単なる leave よりも、関係や注意、接触を少しずつ切っていくニュアンスで捉えると残りやすい。
Build it from `engage` and `dis-`. If `engage` is getting involved, `disengaging` is slowly pulling away from that involvement. It often fits situations like stepping back from a discussion, project, or relationship, not just physically leaving.

disengaging は dis-「離して」+ engage「関与させる・かみ合わせる」+ -ing。engage はフランス語 engager、さらに gage「担保・誓約」に由来し、engagement や mortgage と同根なので、「結びつきを外す」感覚から離脱する意味になる。
Disengaging is built from dis- "apart, away" and engage, plus -ing. Engage came into English through French engager and is linked to an older word meaning a pledge or security, seen also in engagement and mortgage. The idea moved from being bound or involved to being released from that tie, which explains the sense of pulling away or becoming detached.
