古フランス語 quintal、後期ラテン語 quintale を経て、アラビア語 qintar、さらにラテン語 centenarium「100の単位」にさかのぼります。見た目は quint-「5」に見えても本筋は cent-「100」で、だから100キロ前後の重さを表します。関連語は centenary、centner。
Quintal came into English through Old French quintal and Late Latin quintale, from Arabic qintar. Its deeper source is Latin centenarium, meaning a group or measure of one hundred. Even though it looks like quint- "five," its history is really linked to cent- "hundred," like centenary and centner.
