ラテン語 retinēre（引き留める）からフランス語 rêne を経て英語に入った。re-（後ろへ）+ tenēre（保つ）が語根で、馬を「引き留める」ための紐が原義。関連語：retain（保持する）、detention（拘留）。比喩的に「制御・支配」の意味でも使われる。
