解説 Definition
病気の症状が一時的または長期的に軽くなったり消えたりする状態を指す名詞 remission の複数形。がんや自己免疫疾患などで、複数回の寛解がみられることや、複数の患者の寛解例について述べるときに使われる。
Remissions are periods when a disease becomes less severe or seems to disappear for a time. This word is often used in medicine, especially when talking about cancer or long-term illnesses. A remission does not always mean the disease is completely cured.

remission はまず動詞形 remit とセットで覚えると残りやすいです。医療では「症状が引いている状態」で、cure（完治）より弱く、再発の余地があるのが重要。go into remission「寛解に入る」、be in remission「寛解状態にある」が定番表現で、がんや自己免疫疾患の説明でよく見ます。複数形 remissions は、患者ごとの寛解例や、同じ患者に何度も訪れた寛解の時期を並べて述べるときに使います。recovery より専門的で、語尾の -s を見落として単数扱いしないよう注意。
Remember this through the fixed medical phrase `be in remission` or `go into remission`. That collocation is much more useful than trying to remember the word alone. Also, keep it separate from `cure`: remission is a medical status word, not the same as complete recovery.
