地質学で、地層の堆積がいったん途切れ、その後に別の地層が重なった結果できる時間的な断絶を指す名詞です。侵食や隆起によって古い地層の一部が失われたことを示し、地質の歴史を読み解く重要な手がかりになります。
An unconformity is a break or gap between layers of rock that shows a period when no new rock was formed or older rock was worn away. This is mainly a geology term used to describe missing time in the Earth's history.

まず `conform` を「形や基準に合わせる」と押さえると覚えやすいです。`conformity` は「一致・適合」、そこに `un-` が付いて「一致していないこと」。地質では、上下の地層が連続して“きれいに対応していない”状態を指し、ただ乱れているだけでなく、その間に“失われた時間”があるのが核心です。`-ity` は名詞化。`angular unconformity` などの形で見たら、「層が conform していない＝堆積の空白がある」と結び付けると定着します。

unconformity は un-「否定」+ conformity。conformity は古フランス語経由で後期ラテン語 conformare「同じ形にする」に由来します。「同じ型に入らないこと」がそのまま不適合になる語です。conform と uniform も同根です。
Unconformity combines un- "not" with conformity. Conformity comes through Old French from Late Latin conformare, meaning "to shape in the same way." The idea is of not fitting the same form or pattern, which then developed into the sense of lack of agreement or mismatch. Conform and uniform are related words from the same root.
