覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

repays は repay「返済する、恩に報いる」の三人称単数現在形。主語が he、she、単数名詞のとき He repays his debt のように使う。語末が母音字 y なので y を変えずに -s を付け、repays となり、末尾の -s は /z/ と発音する。repay a debt/loan の組み合わせで覚える。

Repays is not a separate base verb; it is the third-person singular present form of repay. Use it with he, she, it, or a singular noun: “He repays his debt every month.” Because repay ends in a vowel followed by y, the y stays unchanged and only -s is added; compare play and plays. The final -s is pronounced /z/. Build the meaning from re-, “back or again,” and pay: to repay is to pay money back or return a favor. Useful combinations include repays a debt, repays a loan, and repays someone’s kindness.

repays の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古フランス語 repaier(re- 再び + paier 支払う)から。paier はラテン語 pacare(なだめる、満足させる)に由来し、pay(支払う)と同根。借りたものを「再び支払う」ことから「返済する」の意味になった。repayment(返済)も同根。

Repays is formed regularly from repay by adding the third-person singular ending -s. Repay entered English through Old French repaier, built from re-, “back” or “again,” and paier, “to pay.” Paier ultimately derives from Latin pacare, meaning “to pacify” or “to satisfy,” which is also the source behind pay. The financial sense developed from satisfying an obligation by paying back what had been borrowed.
