解説 Definition

査読者(reviewers)は、学術論文や研究成果を専門的に評価する人々です。ピアレビューの過程で、投稿論文の妥当性・独創性・正確性などを検討し、コメントや修正案を示したうえで、採択・修正・不採択について編集者に勧告します。査読者名を伏せる方式もありますが、査読は常に匿名とは限りません。

Experts who evaluate submitted academic work for validity, originality, accuracy, and suitability for publication. They usually provide comments and recommend acceptance, revision, or rejection as part of the peer-review process.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

単数 reviewer に複数の -s が付いた形で、語末は /z/ と発音する。review「再検討する」+人を表す -er なので、文字どおり「内容を見直す人たち」。学術文脈では manuscript を読み、validity、originality、accuracy を評価して revisions や掲載可否を勧告する査読者を指す。一般の商品批評家も reviewer だが、peer reviewers と言えば専門家による査読者だと明確になる。

Break reviewers into review + -er + plural -s: people who review, in this case more than one. The final s is pronounced /z/. In academic publishing, picture several independent experts reading a manuscript again and checking its methods, originality, and accuracy. They then provide feedback and may recommend acceptance, revision, or rejection. Useful combinations are peer reviewers, anonymous reviewers, independent reviewers, and reviewer comments. A reviewer can also assess a book, film, or product, so the academic setting matters; peer reviewer makes the specialized sense especially clear. Connect reviewers with the editor, who manages the process but normally makes the final publication decision.

reviewers の語源・成り立ち Etymology

reviewers は review+-er+複数の -s です。review は古フランス語経由でラテン語 videre「見る」に通じ、re- は「再び」を表し、関連語に view, revise があります。つまり「もう一度見直す人たち」で、原稿を読み返して判断する「査読者」の意味になります。

Reviewers is the plural of reviewer, formed from review, the agent suffix -er, and plural -s. Review entered English from French and combines re-, “again,” with a descendant of Latin videre, “to see.” A reviewer is therefore someone who looks at something again in order to assess it. In academic publishing, the word acquired the specialized sense of an expert who evaluates a manuscript before publication, often within a formal peer-review system.
