ペルーの首都リマの名は、ケチュア語の rimaq（話す者）に由来するとされる。征服者ピサロが先住民からこの地名を聞き取った。一方、人名としてはラテン語 rima（裂け目・割れ目）やアラビア語で「白いカモシカ」を意味する語に由来する場合もある。
Rima has more than one possible origin because it is used in different language communities. It may be associated with an Arabic female name traditionally interpreted in connection with a white antelope or gazelle. The identical Latin form rima means a crack or fissure, but that does not establish the origin of every bearer’s name. The Peruvian place-name Lima is commonly traced separately to Quechua Rimaq, “speaker,” and should not be confused with this personal name.
