覚醒
解説 Definition
眠りや無気力な状態から目覚めさせること、または目覚めること。通常は arousal のほうが一般的。
The act or process of waking someone from sleep or inactivity, or the state of becoming awake and responsive. The word is uncommon in modern general English, where arousal or awakening is usually preferred.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
rouse は「眠っている人を起こす」「人を奮起させる」という動詞で、rousal はその動作や結果を表します。sleep からの rousal という場面を思い浮かべましょう。一般には arousal や awakening のほうが頻出なので、rousal は rouse と一緒に関連語として覚えると定着しやすいでしょう。
Connect rousal directly with rouse, “to wake or stir someone,” and treat -al as marking the action or result. Picture a sleeping patient slowly becoming awake after an operation, or a child being gently woken: both illustrate rousal from sleep. Because the noun is uncommon, learn it beside the more frequent awakening and arousal. Awakening is the clearest everyday choice for waking from sleep, while arousal has broader physiological and emotional uses. Keeping rousal tied to the verb rouse helps you recognize it without assuming it is the usual noun.
例文
The loud bell caused his sudden rousal from sleep.
大きなベルの音で、彼は突然眠りから目を覚ました。
The patient's rousal was slow after the operation.
手術後、患者の覚醒には時間がかかった。
Gentle rousal is better than waking a child with a shout.
子どもは大声で起こすより、優しく目覚めさせるほうがよい。

rousal の語源・成り立ち Etymology
rouse「目覚めさせる、奮起させる」に、動作や結果を表す接尾辞 -al が付いた名詞です。rouse の詳しい起源には不確かな点がありますが、中英語期以降に「揺り起こす」という意味で用いられています。
Rousal is formed from the verb rouse and the noun-forming suffix -al, which can denote an action, process, or result. Rouse has been used since the Middle English period in senses related to waking, stirring, or making someone active, although its deeper origin is not fully certain. The derivative therefore literally denotes an act or result of rousing. In contemporary usage it is much less common than awakening or arousal.
