元の生物と全く同じDNAを持つように、人工的に作られた生物。遺伝子技術を使って作られたコピーです。
A clone is an exact copy of a living thing, object, or system. In science, it often means a plant, animal, or cell made to be genetically identical to another. In everyday use, it can also describe something or someone that seems almost exactly the same as another.

clone は1903年に植物学で作られた語で、語源はギリシャ語 klon「小枝・芽」です。枝を切って同じ株を増やす発想から「遺伝的に同一の個体」の意味になったため、クローンは「枝分かれした同じもの」と考えると意味がつながります。関連語は clonal, monoclonal。
Clone was created in biology in 1903 from Greek klon, meaning "twig" or "young branch." The image was of a plant reproduced from a cutting, so the new plant was seen as a direct offshoot of the old one.
