解説 Definition

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
scum はまず、池や煮汁の表面に汚れた泡や薄い膜が浮いている場面で固定すると覚えやすい語です。a layer of scum なら「一層の浮きかす」、skim the scum off the soup なら「スープから浮きかすをすくい取る」。表面に浮く不要な汚れという像から、人を最低で卑劣だと断じる強い侮蔑にも広がり、the scum of society で「社会のくず」となります。人に使う場合は非常に攻撃的なので、単なる bad person よりはるかに強い表現だと押さえると誤用しにくいです。
Picture dirty foam floating on a pond or soup, and remember the phrase "a layer of scum." This image of unwanted dirt also helps explain the insult "the scum of society." Using it about people expresses strong contempt, far beyond simply calling someone bad.
例文

scum の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古ノルド語 skúm(泡・浮きかす)から中英語 scume を経て現代英語へ。ゲルマン祖語 *skūmaz に遡り、ドイツ語 Schaum(泡)と同根。液体表面の不純物が原義で、そこから「社会のくず」という比喩的意味が生まれた。
The word comes through Middle English scume from Old Norse skúm, meaning foam or floating waste. Its literal meaning developed into a figurative insult for people considered worthless.
