samarium は新ラテン語の元素名で、鉱物 samarskite から名づけられました。samarskite はロシア人 Samarsky にちなみ、語尾 -ium は元素名によく付く形なので、「サマルスキー鉱から得られた金属」と考えると意味がつかみやすいです。
Samarium is a New Latin chemical name formed from the mineral samarskite. Samarskite itself was named after the Russian official Samarsky, and the ending -ium is common in element names.
